What we do

NRCG provides expertise in socio-economic and socio-cultural impact assessment, cumulative effects management, and sustainability assessment. We work with our clients to develop an in-depth understanding of what matters to them, provide guidance and support in navigating assessment and resource management regimes, and advocate for community-driven processes. Our work involves comprehensive analysis, clear communication, and context-appropriate deliverables.

Examples of past projects

Selkirk First Nation (SFN) Technical Team

We worked with various experts, consultants, and SFN staff to support the First Nation's technical engagement process related to the proposed Casino Mine. We contributed expertise in socio-economic and cultural impacts, community engagement, and cumulative effects.

Taku River Tlingit Sustainability Assessment for the Atlin Hydro Expansion Project

We supported the review and analysis of a proposed hydro expansion project by the Taku River Tlingit First Nation (TRTFN). We worked with TRTFN staff, leaders, and community to build a sustainability assessment framework. This framework supported TRTFN's analysis of the proposed project's potential benefits and adverse impacts.

Cumulative Effects Working Group for the Dawson Regional Land Use Plan

Lead consultant Kiri Staples represented Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in Government as a member of a technical working group providing support to the Dawson regional land use planning process regarding cumulative effects. I provided guidance on how to advance approaches to cumulative effects management and advice on cumulative impacts to socio-economic and socio-cultural values.

Impact assessment processes in Canada often have a poor track record  when it comes to understanding sustainability assessment, cumulative effects, and socio-cultural values. Yet, these issues are often central to the ways that northern and Indigenous communities experience change. I provide support for communities navigating such issues. Together, we push the assessment, regulatory, and management regime to take a more comprehensive approach to what matters to communities.
